China Achieves First Combined Pig Liver and Kidney Transplant in a Human
Scientists in China have successfully transplanted gene-edited pig liver and kidneys into a human recipient for the first time. The organs functioned for nearly five days, producing bile and urine and showing short-term compatibility.
This breakthrough in xenotransplantation could help address the global shortage of donor organs. However, challenges such as immune rejection, infection risks, and long-term organ survival must still be overcome before the procedure becomes widely available.
Could gene-edited pig organs be the future of organ transplantation?
