Period pain (dysmenorrhea ) is one of the major parts of a woman’s life. Most of us feel like taking out our ovaries and tossing them in the dustbin in these 6 days. Due to the hormonal change, everything changes for a few days, for 6 days, the world becomes a little more irritating, trust me, you are not alone in it. Add to that the pain!! Most of the women I met do not take medicine during their periods, so do I. We choose suffering over the drug that’s also a superpower to be honest, but only pharmacological therapies can help with this? No, there are many non-pharmacological therapies available. Here are some examples:
Some non-pharmacological therapies:
-
Heat therapy: One of the easiest and most common therapies is heat therapy. Application of heat to the lower abdomen relaxes the uterine muscles and improves circulation, resulting in reduced pain.
-
Physical exercise: Mild exercise, such as stretching, yoga, and walking, helps release endorphins, which reduces stress and improves pelvic blood flow, reducing pain.
-
Massage therapy: Gentle abdominal and back massage feels like heaven during these days. It helps by improving circulation and reducing muscle spasm.
-
Acupuncture and acupressure: Done by stimulating specific body points to relieve pain. Help in improving circulation. Must be done by a trained person
-
Adequate sleep and rest: During these days, proper sleep and rest are one of the most important parts as the body is working an extra mile. Proper sleep helps regulate hormones and reduce fatigue and sensitivity to pain.
-
Stress management: Due to hormonal changes, women feel more stressed during periods. Techniques :
- Meditation
- Mindfulness
- Music therapy
- Deep breathing therapy
7. Lifestyle: Any change require continue efforts, nothing changes overnight, thus a few lifestyle changes in our life will help us like
- Increase fluid intake
