New Research Links Fasting-Mimicking Diet to Lower Periodontal Inflammation

It is now well established fact that though periodontal disease is microbial driven inflammatory destruction of tooth supporting structure, this inflammation affects systemically too.

Recently many scientific researchers have shown that fasting mimicking diet( a 5 day low calorie high fat diet) helps reduce inflammation and hence lowers the risk of inflammatory disorders like biological aging, cardiovascular disease.

A recent systematic review suggests that caloric restriction may have positive affect periodontal inflammation and also some studies on intermittent fasting has shown favourable results in reduction of periodontal inflammation.

According to Dr. Giuseppe Mainas of King’s College London, their study suggests lifestyle modifications could be important alongside proper tooth brushing for patients.

According to Dr. Luigi Nibali, Professor of Periodontology of King’s College London, fasting reduces oxidative stress in the body(a common cause of inflammation) which can damage cells and DNA. Intake of high calorie foods and refined carbohydrates can cause inflammation hence restricting these foods helps reduces oxidative stress in the body. They even suggested that fasting might have beneficial effects on the microbiome (body’s community of bacteria that help to keep it healthy) of the body.

However future researches with large scale sampling is necessary to confirm the findings

This is a fascinating example of how oral health is closely linked to overall health. As someone interested in biomedical research, I find these findings very promising but I believe larger, well-designed clinical studies are still needed before drawing strong conclusions. Understanding the underlying mechanisms will be just as important as confirming the clinical benefits.

Also, I really enjoyed reading this. @Neethu Could you please share which resources or databases you use to find and stay updated with such interesting research papers? I’d love to explore them as well.

Good work!! I hope clinical studies like these continue to highlight the known and the most ignored fact that oral health is an integral part of overall health.

Studies suggest that periodontal tissue can act as a reservoir for numerous bacteria which may contribute of ill health of cardiovascular tissues. This is a broader perspective which denotes the fact that human body is an aggregate and functions as a micro machinery of different organ systems.

Hai @Yashasvini I’m really glad your liked my post. I usually get these research through multiple sources like, News Medical, Google News, Medbound Times and different social media posts especially from LinkedIn and X.

Very informative. Restricting high calorie diet can improve overall health and corelated to improved periodontal health. Further clinical sampling and researches are required for confirmation.

Very helpful, nutrition and fasting can support periodontal health when combined with appropriate dental care. It’s amazing to see the growing evidence that dietary habits and fasting may contribute to improved periodontal health.
