Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life that brings significant hormonal changes, leading to symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and more. However, many women are unaware that these hormonal changes can also affect their oral health.

I have seen many women above the age of 40 suffering from periodontal diseases. If other risk factors for periodontal disease are present, such as diabetes, then they may have severe periodontitis.

**How does menopause affect the gingiva?**

Reduced estrogen levels can make the gingival tissues more susceptible to inflammation and infection, increasing the risk of periodontal problems.

**Common symptoms** • Swollen and tender gums
• Increased bleeding while brushing or flossing
• Gingival recession
• Dry mouth (xerostomia)
• Burning sensation in the mouth

If left untreated, these changes may contribute to the development or progression of periodontal diseases such as periodontitis.

**How to maintain oral health during menopause** • Brush twice daily with proper technique
• Clean interdentally using floss or interdental brushes
• Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet
• Schedule regular dental check-ups
• Undergo professional scaling when required
• Avoid smoking and tobacco products

Research suggests that postmenopausal women may be at a higher risk of periodontal disease due to reduced estrogen levels. Estrogen plays an important role in maintaining bone density and supporting the health of periodontal tissues. A decline in estrogen can increase susceptibility to gingival inflammation, attachment loss, and alveolar bone loss, making regular dental care especially important during this stage of life.

Menopause is a natural transition, but maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking timely dental care can help prevent complications and preserve oral health. So, spreading awareness about oral health during menopause and postmenopause is very important among women.

How often do you encounter women with gingivitis or periodontitis during menopause? What strategies do you use to manage these patients?

Yes, that’s true, particularly the problem of dry mouth and a burning sensation in the mouth, which is very common during menopause. In fact, the problem of gingivitis or periodontitis during menopause is also common. Regular care and visits to a dentist should be done to avoid any further complications.

Menopause can significantly impact oral health, making periodontal care even more important. A patient-centered approach that combines preventive dental care, early intervention, lifestyle modifications, and education can help minimize disease progression and improve overall oral health.

Hormonal changes play a significant role in periodontal health in females, making them more susceptible to gingival inflammation at different stages of life. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups can help detect problems early and prevent the progression of periodontal disease.

It is interesting how menopause is widely discussed, yet its impact on oral health often goes unnoticed. Awareness can truly make a difference.
