**IV Set Bought for ₹11, MRP ₹325: Maharashtra FDA Raises Concern**

In July 2026, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) checked the prices of hospital consumables in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Bills from around 20–25 hospitals were examined.

The FDA found a big difference between the purchase price and the printed MRP of some hospital consumables. For example, an IV infusion set was purchased for ₹11.05, but its printed MRP was ₹325. A syringe was purchased for ₹6.75 and had an MRP of ₹57.20, while a catheter purchased for ₹29.41 had an MRP of ₹310. The FDA also reported margins of around 200–300% for some consumables.

The FDA sent its findings to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) in the first week of August. It suggested reviewing the difference between the purchase price and MRP and proposed bringing frequently used and essential hospital consumables and medical devices under price control.

The FDA also clarified that it cannot control hospital admission or procedure charges. Its role in this matter is to raise the pricing issue with the NPPA, which is the authority that can regulate these prices.

**Do you think patients should have more transparency about the prices of hospital consumables, along with hospital and medicine charges?**

Yes absolutely the patients should have a clear idea of the price of all the hospital consumables. NPPA plays a major role in this aspect, it helps to regulate the price of the goods and medicines. But regulatory authorities should discourage such practices by conducting regular inspections. This would ensure that the patient is not looted and charged appropriately.

yes, these regulations authorities should have a clear idea before increasing the price. Such a big difference in the increase in price causes a lot trouble in patients. This could cause more burden to patients to take care of hospitalization.

I think patients should be aware about the prices of hospital consumables. In the above scenario, patients are being subjected to unnecessary high charges. This forces several financially backward patients to stop seeking treatment and suffer their illnesses in silence.

Patients deserve full transparency- knowing the actual cost vs. MRP would help them make informed decisions.
