In many Indian households and traditions, applying turmeric to the feet is seen during rituals, weddings, self-care practices, or traditional wellness routines. Most people know it as a cultural practice, but it’s interesting that turmeric itself has properties that made it valuable long before modern skincare trends existed.

Turmeric contains compounds like curcumin, which are associated with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Traditionally, it has been used in skincare and body care practices for cleanliness, soothing the skin, and maintaining overall hygiene.

Feet go through constant pressure, sweat, dust exposure, friction, and contact with surfaces throughout the day, so traditional practices involving foot care may have developed for practical reasons too, not just rituals alone.

And honestly, it’s fascinating how many traditional practices people dismiss as “old customs” may actually have deeper connections to hygiene, comfort, wellness, or sensory care.

Turmeric is also used in foot ointments and creams to treat certain conditions which is really fascinating.

There are numerous other traditional remedies backed by modern science. To name a few: ashwagandha is widely researched for anxiety, while berberine (from Berberis) shows promise for metabolic conditions. Even traditional therapies like cupping and leeching have specific modern clinical applications. However, because some of them carry potent medicinal properties, it is incredibly important to use them under the supervision of certified healthcare professionals.
