Hobbies vs studies ? Why you need the balance .

I often see medical students give up their hobbies completely for studies. It’s not wrong but are we really meant to spend some of our best years locked in a room?

Will hobbies affect studies? Honestly, no. If anything, they help you keep going. For me, it’s basketball.

On my bad days or even worst days when I’ve made a mistakes during posting, scolded by professors, dealt with difficult roommate moments, or felt stuck in hostel politics,I would just get ready, lace up my shoes, and head to the court.

That one hour of basketball changes everything. It clears my head, resets my mood, and helps me feel like myself again.

During competition or friendly face offs it’s even better-the laughter, the competition, the adrenaline rush. Also you get to interact and befriend seniors , professors and juniors.

What was your escape from those chaotic days?

After studies you can keep some time for yourself where you can enjoy your hobbies. If you manage your time it comes into your routine It helps to relieve stress and increases your creativity. For me it was playing guitar.

I agree, writing songs is my escape. It lifts the heaviness off me and pulls me into a different space. Whenever everything feels overwhelming, it brings me a sense of calm and quiet peace.

For me, it’s reading a novel with music in my ears–it helps me disconnect from everything for a while and reset my mind

Well said! Everyone must have a hobby to feel relaxed and peaceful after long work/study hours.

I think for me Journaling, listening to music, writing and reading books are something which I love and enjoy doing and keeps me relaxed and distracted from all the chaos in life.

From my first year of college i get busy with college study and all that affect on my hobbies i.e painting :artist_palette: i barely get time to do.

Studies keep us oriented and sports keeps us lively . I have spent my whole childhood playing upto 60% and studying about 40% . Now I understand and feel no regret doing that . Do what keeps you lively. At the same time we need to maintain the balance between the liveliness and the practicality

Making time out for habits often develops better emotional resilience, time management, and overall well-being.

Completely agree. Hobbies aren’t just an escape; they are a necessity for long-term survival in medicine. It’s so important to have something that makes us feel like yourself again after a tough day.

I do agree with the balance part. But sometimes I also wonder if hobbies are just hobbies or something more like a way to actually feel like myself again. It makes me question the bigger picture too: why we work, what the purpose really is, especially when it starts feeling overwhelming.
