Have you ever heard of Tall Poppy Syndrome?

Syndrome means a group of symptoms that indicates to one perticular diseases. But Tall Poppy Syndrome is completely different from what we all think it may be. It refers to a phenomenon in which people get criticised, undermined, or attacked for being notably successful.

It originated in Ancient Rome, when a king instructed his son to execute all powerful men in the area where he ruled - not in words, but by cutting the heads of all the tall poppy plants in the garden.

Tall Poppy Syndrome mostly affects people in the workplace, when people with jealousy, sexism, racism, etc., try to undermine people with high achievers. Research has shown that it is usually men who undermine women for their success in the workplace.

How to deal with it?

  • Avoiding unwanted comments made by such people who are jealous of you
  • Recording the bullying
  • Reporting to higher officials

Since Tall Poppy Syndrome can affect one’s mental health and self-esteem, it can lead to anxiety and depression. In such extreme cases, Psychotherapy is the best way to come out of this. The doctors may also prescribe anti-depression medicines.

Reading the title, tall poppy syndrome, I thought it’s occurrence of some group of symptoms due to the opium.

It was something else inside, good one. Coming out these type of traumas seems easy but it is very difficult, because you face the same people everyday.

I had never heard this term before, but the concept feels very real in today’s world. Sometimes people get judged more for their success than their mistakes. Supporting and appreciating others instead of pulling them down is equally important for a healthy environment.
