Govt Medical Colleges in Delhi

Delhi’s government MBBS colleges are often seen as the ultimate destination for medical aspirants, but the system behind them is far more complex than the reputation suggests. Institutions like Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) with Safdarjung Hospital, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) with Dr. RML Hospital, NDMC Medical College (Hindu Rao Hospital), and ESIC Medical College & PGIMSR together form the backbone of Delhi’s government medical education network.

Each of these colleges carries its own legacy, but they are all tied together by one reality: extremely limited seats, intense NEET competition, and evolving cut-offs that shift every year. While fees remain relatively affordable compared to private institutions, the demand far outweighs the supply, making access itself a major challenge.

So, in a system this competitive and layered, are we truly measuring medical education by merit alone, or by something far more complicated than we admit?

Not only merit is at play here. Reservation and state for passing 12th exam, all of these play a role which is far away from a students true calibre.

It’s not just merit—access also depends on opportunities, resources, and intense competition. The system is merit-based, but not equally fair for everyone.

Getting into a govt institution is a struggle in itself. It’s not just our preparation that decides our future. How well the exam went on D-Day, how competitors performed, reservations, seat availability, and our destiny—all these factors are crucial.
