Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system stimulant commonly abused for increased energy, wakefulness, euphoria, appetite suppression, and enhanced concentration. However, its effects are highly destructive and often irreversible.

## **STAGES OF METHAMPHETAMINE USAGE:**

- _**Rush (Flash)**:_ Immediate intense euphoria following use.

- _ **High:** _ Increased energy, hyperfocus, irritability, aggression, and argumentative behavior.

- _ **Binge:** _ Prolonged period of mental and physical hyperactivity.

- _**Tweaking (Most Dangerous Stage):**_

- Drug no longer produces a pleasurable effect.

- Severe agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, and loss of identity.

- _Formication_ (sensation of insects crawling under the skin), leading to compulsive scratching and self-injury.

- Increased risk of violent and hostile behavior.

- _ **Crash:** _ Extreme exhaustion, prolonged sleep, and a lifeless state.

- _ **Withdrawal:** _ Depression, anxiety, fatigue, dehydration, increased appetite, and intense drug cravings.

# **SYSTEMIC EFFECTS:**

- Highly addictive with significant neurotoxic effects.

- Associated with stroke, cerebral edema, seizures, psychosis, paranoia, hallucinations, memory impairment, reduced cognitive function, and mood disturbances.

- Hyperthermia and excessive sweating can result in permanent brain damage or death.

- Increased risk of HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted infections due to high-risk sexual behaviors and needle sharing.

# **ORAL MANIFESTATIONS:**

# **" THE METH MOUTH"**

- Severe **xerostomia** (dry mouth) reduces saliva’s protective and buffering effects.

- Rampant cervical **caries** producing the characteristic “apple-core” pattern of decay.

- Poor oral hygiene, frequent consumption of sugary beverages, dietary neglect, and **bruxism** accelerate tooth destruction.

- Dry, inflamed oral tissues are prone to **ulceration** and **secondary infections.**

- Bruxism causes severe **attrition, enamel fractures, tooth fractures, and temporomandibular joint disorders.**

- Advanced cases may require full-mouth **extractions** and complex prosthodontic rehabilitation.

_ **Have you ever encountered a patient with methamphetamine abuse? If so, what steps did you take to counsel, educate, and refer them for appropriate treatment?** _
