Many patients visit a dentist hoping for immediate relief from unbearable tooth pain as the last option that’s left to try. In most of the cases, they show up with a profound facial swelling. When we ask what they did before seeking treatment, the answers are often surprising;

“I applied pain relief Balm/Oil on the cheek.” Or “I placed a mixture of turmeric and salt on the pimple above my tooth.”

 ![4917](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex033/uploads/medbound/original/2X/7/75e4fbb1c5c2433b90b585e1b79d66dcfa425566.jpeg)

While some home remedies may provide **temporary comfort** , they do not eliminate the source of a dental infection. Some frequently raised doubts in this issue are:

**1.Can we apply pain relieving balms/oils for toothache?**

In fact, products such as medicated balms or oils are **not intended for use inside the mouth.** Instead and may irritate the oral tissues and can **worsen** the condition. Medicated oils like clove oil can be used for short-term pain relief, due to its obtundant property but it **doesn’t serve as a permanent cure**. Likewise, turmeric or salt cannot treat an infected dental pulp or drain a dental abscess.

**2. Can sea salt with turmeric cure a toothache?**

No. There is no evidence that sea salt is superior to regular table salt for relieving tooth pain. _A warm saltwater rinse may help reduce irritation and improve oral hygiene, but it cannot cure the underlying cause of a toothache._

**3. Does salt water cure toothache?**

**No**. Saltwater rinses are only a supportive measure. They **cannot** **treat** deep decay, irreversible pulpitis, or a dental abscess.

**4. Home remedies for unbearable tooth pain?**

_Most home remedies provide only temporary symptom relief._ Persistent or severe tooth pain usually requires a professional diagnosis and treatment, such as a filling, root canal treatment, drainage, or extraction.

To all the questions like – What should you do if you have unbearable tooth pain? The best possible things to do without any further delay are,

✔ Seek dental care as early as possible.

✔ Take pain medication only as advised by a healthcare professional.

✔ Avoid placing balms, oils, aspirin, or other substances directly on the tooth or gums.

✔ If you develop facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, seek urgent medical attention.

Tooth pain is your body’s warning signal. Treating the cause—not just the symptoms—is the key to lasting relief.

**What home remedies are you familiar with or have tried? Share your thoughts.**

This reminded me of my own experience with wisdom tooth pain. I initially thought it would go away, but the pain kept getting worse and even caused headaches and difficulty eating. Getting the right dental treatment made me realize that treating the cause is far more important than relying on temporary home remedies.

Yes, balms or oils have a temporary obtundant effect on the tooth but in cases with long standing infections, these may further irritate the tissue and cause exaggeration. I’m happy, you didn’t jump into home remedies.

Most people have this misconception and they rely on home remedies, hoping they’ll fix the problem, but they’re only meant for temporary relief. Identifying and treating the underline cause is what really matters.

People always switch to instant reliefs rather than getting the required treatment. Especially, in dentistry people often expect instant healing. There are certain conditions wherein tissues take time to heal, but patient’s often anticipate rapid recovery. That’s how they go for instant home remedies.

Some patients also tend to use hot fomentation in case of a toothache, which can worsen the condition and potentially turn an otherwise easily treatable situation into a dental emergency.

Clove oils are generally used in our households for getting some relief. But, they are not helpful for longer periods ultimately doctor’s visit is the only real solution to toothache.

Yes this is totally right that home remedies can be used for temporary relief but it can’t give the permanent cure. I have also used Clove oil for my tooth aches but it only gives a short time pain relief as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-analgesic property but it can not help you to get rid of toothache permanently. Some habits like using luke warm salt water can help you to maintain a good oral health.

If you are suffering from any type of oral problem, you should to visit a dentist first, don’t do any unnecessary thing without a professional consultation, it can make the condition even worse.

During my internship, I came across patients who used balm or hot oil around an infected tooth for pain relief. Such practices may irritate the surrounding tissues and can sometimes worsen symptoms like swelling. As a dental graduate, I believe it is more important to identify and treat the underlying cause of the toothache rather than rely on such remedies.

When I was in college, I used to have a toothache that lasted for a month. Initially, I thought it would go away, and I didn’t realize that the pain was actually coming from my tooth. I thought it was a cheek pain. Later, I found out that I had a cavity. My grandmother suggested keeping a clove between my teeth for sometime. It gave me temporary relief, but eventually clove stopped helping,so I visited dentist.
