Sometimes the most common thing confuses us the most. Here are some myths and the science behind them to help patients who are confused:

1. **A higher fever means a more dangerous disease** - How a person feels is far more important than the no. on the scale. The height of the temperature does NOT determine the seriousness of the infection.
2. **Medicine can treat fever** - Though fever reducers exist and work (reduces 1 to 2 degrees of body temperature) , medicines like paracetamol and ibuprofen treat the discomfort not the fever itself. They cannot make the disease go away faster.
3. **Fever means an infection** - The body temperature is raised when the immune system gets activated. For eg. - autoimmune diseases, tissue damage and certain medicines can temporarily give fever.
4. **Fevers are harmful** - They aren’t damaging until 107°F which is possible only because of external factors like heat stroke. Fevers are actually beneficial to the body as the increased temperature helps slow down the reproduction of viruses and bacteria. It also provides a super boost to the WBC and helps them move faster

Which of these fever myths have you heard before ? Or is there another fever myth you’ve come across? Let’s discuss it in the comments!

i really like this post but can’t agree with point 4 that fever are beneficial to body yet certain extent it act as sign and indicates the pathology early but fever itself don’t give any benefit to body such as killing virus and bacteria because at temp human cells also damages so fever not at all good for human body.

It’s so true that people treat any spike in temperature as the enemy. Reminding everyone that a fever is actually proof that the immune system is doing its job is such an important takeaway.

Fever may occur due to various reasons and certainly shows body’s natural immune response. However having high fever for longer duration is alarming and should be taken seriously.

We often assume that a higher fever always means a more serious illness but there’s much more to it than the number on the thermometer. Great myth-busting post!
