Wound healing is a complex and dynamic biological process.Understanding the mechanism of healing is crucial in managing wounds. It has distinct stages as well as it depends on several factors both local and systemic.

**Stages of wound healing**

1. **Haemostasis**

Disruption of the vascular endothelium following an injury triggers immediate vasoconstriction and exposes the subendothelial extracellular matrix. This is followed by platelet plug formation , release of granules by platelets containing growth factors , and lastly fibrin scaffold formation by thrombin.

**2.Inflammatory phase**

Divided into Early Inflammatory Phase (Days 1–2) and late Inflammatory Phase (Days 2-3 ): predominanted by PMNLs and macrophages respectively. This stage has traditionally been defined by \*rubor\* (redness), \*tumor\* (swelling), \*calor\* (heat), and \*dolor\* (pain).

**3.Proliferation phase:-**

Beginning around day 3 and lasting 2 to 4 weeks, this phase is dominated by fibroblast activity. It involves angiogenesis, re-epithelialisation, and the production of collagen and ground substances.

**4.Remodelling**

This final phase begins 2 to 3 weeks post-injury and can last for a year or longer. The weaker Type III collagen that was prevalent during the proliferation phase is progressively replaced by stronger Type I collagen until the skin’s normal 4:1 ratio (Type I to Type III) is re-established.

# Factors affecting wound healing:-

**Local Factors:**

1)Skin tension

2)Hypoxia and ischaemia

3)Vascular insufficiency

4)Lymphoedema

5)Contamination

6)Infection

7)Presence of foreign bodies

8)Radiotherapy

**Systemic Factors**

1)Advancing age

2)Obesity

3)Malnutrition

4)Smoking

5)Diseases: Conditions such as diabetes mellitus and connective tissue diseases.

6)Immunocompromised states: Conditions such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

7)Medications: Direct impacts from drugs such as steroids, immunosuppressants, and chemotherapy.

Can you suggest some dietary supplements or food items which can hasten wound healing?

Ikr! We often talk about dressings and antibiotics, but nutrition is the quiet partner that does a lot of the heavy lifting in wound healing

Great explanation of the healing process! From a nutritional perspective, adequate protein is probably the most important factor, as it provides the building blocks for tissue repair. Foods rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits, guava, bell peppers), zinc (eggs, seafood, legumes), and vitamin A also support collagen formation, immune function, and wound healing. Staying well hydrated is equally important.

That’s actually insightful. We often forget about the food that actually helps in wound healing.

healing also varies in different type of wound like in incised wound heals more faster than lacerated wound.

Great overview of the wound healing process. Along with proper wound care, nutrition can make a significant difference. A diet rich in protein (eggs, pulses, dairy, lean meat), vitamin C (citrus fruits, guava, amla), zinc (nuts, seeds, legumes), and vitamin A (carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach) supports tissue repair. Staying well-hydrated is equally important. For people with diabetes or other chronic illnesses, good control of the underlying condition is just as essential as nutritional support for optimal healing.

A nutrient-rich diet can support faster wound healing. Focus on **protein** (eggs, fish, pulses), **vitamin C** (oranges, amla, guava), **zinc** (nuts, seeds, beans), **vitamin A** (carrots, spinach), and **iron-rich foods** if needed. Stay well hydrated, and use supplements only if recommended by a healthcare professional.

It’s easy to take wound healing for granted, but the underlying cellular crosstalk—platelets recruiting neutrophils, macrophages clearing debris, and fibroblasts laying down new matrix—is incredibly complex. Reminders like this really highlight the beauty of tissue repair.

Healing occurs naturally,

It occurs through stages of **hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and tissue remodeling**.
Proper wound care, nutrition, and timely treatment help prevent infection and promote faster healing.
