## **Intro**

Arav, a 2 years old, visited his pediatrician two years ago. His mother saw he didn’t acknowledge her, didn’t look her in the eye and made repetitive hand movements. Arav was diagnosed and started early behavioral therapy in full within three months. At present, age 5, he is in mainstream school with few adaptations.

This is compared to Nisha who had parents who believed that this was just a “shyness. By age 4 diagnosis was delayed, critical intervention years missed. **Early autism diagnoses in Children** Are Not a Luxury, but a Game Changer. Studies have shown that by the age of 3, children who are diagnosed and intervened have 20-30% better outcomes by school age in language, social skills and adaptive functioning.

## **What Is Early Diagnosis?**

**Early autism diagnosis in children** is the ability to diagnose ASD before the age of 5, preferably 2-3 years. This process is a comprehensive one, integrating developmental screening (M-CHAT, ADOS-2), clinical observations, and medical evaluation, that aims to detect differences early, when intervention is more likely to be successful.

## **Red Flags: When to Act**

**By 12 months:** Still does not babble, does not respond to his/her name, and has little or no eye contact.

**By 18-24 months:** Some gestures, repetitive movements, unusual sensory reactions.

**By 3 years:** Poor peer interaction, inflexibility, lack of interest.

If you see 2-3 of these, you should make an appointment for a developmental screening this week, NOT next month.

## **Screening Tools That Work**

**M-CHAT:** 23-question screening for ages 16-30 months.[Research shows 90% sensitivity](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22147335/) for identifying risk.

**ADOS-2:** Gold-standard observation, clinicians observe social interaction/communication for 40-60 minutes.

**CARS:** Rates 15 behavioral areas to help elicit severity classification.

## **Real Case: Early Intervention Changes Everything**

Rohan (age 2.5 years) presented a very well formed vocabulary, but lacked interaction with peers, obsessive lining up of toys and very sensitive to sensory input. Peer engagement made significant improvement after sensory-informed behavioral therapy (18 months). **Key insight:** If you have high intelligence, you may have autism. His support needs have been identified early and are helping him overcome barriers to his learning.

## **Why It Matters**

[Studies consistently show](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5387099/) that children diagnosed and treated before 3 years of age will have improved social outcomes, language development and fewer behavioral problems that will affect them throughout their lives.

## **Infographic Blueprint**

## **Closing Question for Parents**

**Here’s what most parents don’t ask until it’s too late:** If your child exhibits any of these red flag symptoms right now, why not get a developmental screening this week, not next month? Each month of delay is a month your child is not getting help to change their learning and social trajectory. What would be different if you did something different now?

Yes. Rightly said. The NGO’s should come forward to take the issue to the people. Dr. Asma, I appreciate your good comment.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Dr. Asma,

Thank you for your comment. If the medical fraternity takes the initiative to launch an Awareness Campaign, I will gladly stand with you and contribute in every possible way. I can also help take the message forward to SM. CJP has already proven that meaningful initiatives can succeed when people come together with commitment and purpose.

Because I worked for about a year as a Patient Concierge Representative at R3 Stem Cells in Scottsdale, USA, I developed a fair understanding of Autism. That experience is one of the reasons I wrote this article.

Great awareness post! @Ezhil_Arasu

Early diagnosis isn’t about giving a child a label, it’s about giving them the right support at the right time. Every child develops differently but recognizing early signs and seeking a professional evaluation when concerns arise can make a meaningful difference in their development and quality of life.

Autism is the most misunderstood condition in our society. Many blame parents or the child and accept that it can’t be reversed. But early intervention could definitely help the child. Thanks for raising awareness of it.

I’m glad you read my article, Dr. Mandru. Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback.

Nearly 90% of the autistic children I interacted with aged 4, 5, 8, and even 13—were cases I encountered while working as a Patient Conceirge Representative (PCR) in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. In many instances, parents were unaware of the significance of the early symptoms, and the condition was often misunderstood, just as you pointed out.

Based on my experience with R3 Stem Cell therapy, earlier detection can make a significant difference. While the treatment is generally not administered before the age of two, children diagnosed and treated closer to that age often have better outcomes. As intervention is delayed, the duration and complexity of treatment tend to increase.

It was such a informative post about autism.Spreading awareness about it is necessary because so many parents are still unaware of this condition which leads to delay in treatment plan for their kid, hoping for this picture to change in coming time.
