_ **Paracetamol: A Common Pain and Fever Reliever** _

**Paracetamol, also known as Acetaminophen,** is one of the most widely used medications for relieving mild to moderate pain and reducing fever. It is commonly available over the counter and is considered safe when used within recommended doses.

Unlike **non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)**, paracetamol has very little anti-inflammatory effect but is highly effective in lowering body temperature and relieving pain. It works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the brain, which helps in reducing fever and altering the perception of pain.

• Used for conditions like headache, toothache, muscle pain, and fever.

• Suitable for both children and adults.

• Available in tablets, syrups, and injectable forms.

• Preferred in patients who cannot tolerate NSAIDs due to gastric issues.

**Importance as a Drug:**

Paracetamol holds great importance in **both clinical practice and everyday healthcare.** It is included in the World Health Organization’s essential medicines list, making it a vital drug globally. Its affordability and easy availability make it especially useful in primary healthcare settings.

However, excessive intake can lead to severe liver damage, also known as hepatotoxicity. Therefore, proper dosage and awareness are necessary to avoid complications.

Paracetamol is one of the most commonly used drug in both children and adults.

When coming to pediatric population its very important to check the dose. Children require weight base dosing and even small dosing errors can lead to under-treatment or toxicity. Especially when administering paracetamol syrup, parents should be counselled regarding the exact ml to be given and the dosing interval.
