In the documentary the scientist who runs at night Dr. Guha stated that about 15 years of his research went down the drain due to “unjustified” bureaucratic delays. He said when he first suggested a male contraceptive based on electrical charges the scientific establishment ridiculed the idea, saying there is no conceivable link between contraception and bioelectricity.

But once they saw that it worked in animals, opposition began in earnest:

The Medical Degree Mandate: The main reason given was that Guha was an electrical engineer, not a doctor. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) refused to allow clinical trials on humans by a nonmedical professional. To get a medical degree, Guha started attending medical school in his thirties – giving 7 a.m. lectures in electrical engineering at IIT Delhi before rushing to his 8 a.m. lecture as an M.B.B.S. student at the University College of Medical Sciences.

**Discussion:** Why do you think Indian pharmaceutical breakthroughs take so long to reach the general public?

I think one of the biggest reasons is the gap between scientific discovery and real-world accessibility

I think the reason would be fewer investigator-led clinical trials (i.e. trials initiated by independent researchers or clinicians). Adequate support for such independent trials might not be available.

An electrical engineer going to med school in his thirties just to get his own idea tested? That’s dedication.
