At first glance, asking if fish get thirsty sounds like asking some very weird question. But the answer depends on where the fish lives- in the saltwater or freshwater- so how it maintains water balance in its body.

  • Saltwater fish live in an environment saltier than their own body fluids.
  • Because of osmosis, they naturally lose water through their skin and gills.
  • To avoid dehydration, they constantly drink seawater.
  • Their kidneys and specialised cells work overtime to get rid of excess salt and retain water.

So a saltwater Fish might drink many mouthfuls of water per hour just to stay hydrated.

  • Freshwater fish live in water that is less salty than their body fluids.
  • Water actually enters their bodies constantly through osmosis.
  • These fishes don’t drink at all-in fact, they must actively get rid of excess water by peeing a lot.
  • Their kidneys are champions at filtering water and keeping essential salts.

If freshwater fish tried drinking water, it would risk diluting itself too much :sad_but_relieved_face:

Fish never get thirsty they live in water and absorb water by gills and depends upon types of fish and their where the fish lives
