Career Opportunities for Life Science Graduates: Dry Labs vs Wet Labs

Life science graduates often get confused between choosing career between dry lab and wet labs. Here is my simple explanation according to my knowledge and experience:

1. Dry labs- These basically involves computational research (desk) jobs such as:

• Clinical data management
• Pharmacovigilance
• Regulatory affairs
• Bioinformatics
• QA
• AI in life sciences

2. Wet labs - These include laboratory works dealing with chemicals and biological samples. Skills required -Sample handling, handling instruments such as Chromatography, HPLC, PCR, ELISA

• R & D department
• Microbiologist / Biotechnologist/ Molecular biologist
• Research assistant
• Lab technicians
• QC

Both dry labs and wet labs offer amazing opportunities and better long term career goals. Each job role has its own charm and importance- Some love agar plates, others love data!

Both paths are equally important and impactful. Dry labs are rapidly expanding with data, AI and regulatory roles, while wet labs remain the backbone of discovery and validation. I feel the future lies in interdisciplinary skills where understanding both data and lab science can open the most exciting opportunities.
