Myopia, commonly known as **near sightedness** , is the most common eye disorder worldwide and leading cause of visual impairment in children. Myopia is considered a global epidemic with estimates suggesting that nearly half of the world’s population will be affected by 2050.

# What is myopia (nearsightedness) ?

Myopia is a condition wherein nearby objects appear clear while distant objects appear blurry. It occurs when the eyeball is too large or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of retina rather than directly on retina. Genes play a big role, but the rapid surge in myopic cases cannot be attributed to genetics alone, as human gene pools do not change that quickly. Environmental factors also significantly impact the development and progression of myopia.

# How does outdoor time help prevent myopia?

Research suggests that spending time outdoors may help reduce the risk of developing myopia in children. This may occur through several mechanisms:

1. Reduced near work - Indoor activities especially involving close-up work (reading, screen use) in dim light increases the chances of myopia by causing eye strain and reducing the exposure to natural light.

2. Increased distance vision - Outdoor activities allows eyes to focus on distant objects, relaxing the focusing muscles which remain strained by constant, close up indoor activities.

3. Dopamine stimulation - Sunlight triggers dopamine release in the retina, which prevents the eyeball from growing excessively long.

Increased outdoor activity has shown to prevent the onset of myopia. However, once myopia has already developed, spending more time outdoors does not seem to halt its progression.

# What can parents do?

Parents can take a few simple steps to protect their child’s eye health

1. Make sure children spend more time outdoors as this allows them to focus on distant objects.

2. Limit excessive screen time and prolonged closeup activities.

3. Get the vision checked at regular intervals to detect eye problems early.

# Bottom line

As myopia cases are rapidly increasing, it is necessary to take preventive measures. Since people with myopia are at increased risk of retinal detachment, timely eye care is extremely important.

Nowadays, mobile culture takes over outdoor activity; it directly affects eye health that links with the brain. Parents should encourage children to engage in outdoor activities such as dance, yoga, crafts, art, and sports classes. All these are good for overall health and well-being as well as bringing opportunities to learn social skills.

Education and awareness about myopia in children should be provided by pediatrics to the parents. Importance of preventive measures like playing outdoors, limiting screentime, avoiding close object play, and sunlight exposure should be followed. In order to prevent future of children parents should make efforts in prevention of myopia in the children.

I think screen time is one of the major reason for this condition. Reducing the screen time and increasing the outdoor and other activities would be a chance to reduce this condition.

I was surprised to know that by 2050 half of the population will be myopic. Really screen time is taking it’s toll. Children should be encouraged to play outdoors under sunshine to avoid this epidemic.
