When a large amount of air enters the blood circulation, it is called an air embolism. This air can block blood flow and may become dangerous, especially if it reaches the heart, lungs, or brain. But the important thing is that a very tiny bubble in a normal IV set usually does not cause serious harm.
Our body can often tolerate small amounts of air because the lungs are able to filter tiny bubbles before they create major problems. In fact, small microbubbles are sometimes accidentally seen during injections or IV line handling, and most patients remain completely fine.
