Antibiotic treatment failure is the biggest concern of our time. It is one of the top 10 threats to global health. One health approach determines that Antibiotic resistance is a problem so wide and varied that it affects not only humans but also other ecological factors like: Soil, crops, water, animals at different levels. And increased resistance in ecosystem ultimately reaches human via direct or indirect sources.
A study by lancet shows direct correlation between PM 2.5 and antibiotic resistance a trend which is consistent globally. Several studies in China also shows direct correlation of increased PM 2.5 concentration in air with increased Antibiotic resistance in that population.
Recently, in Delhi similar situations are seen arising because of its air pollution problem. Superbug are developing in high pollution cities like Delhi because of dual burden of increased PM 2.5 and the use of antibiotic excessively and without prescription.
What do you think is the biggest problem caused by excessive use of antibiotics?
Antibiotic resistance is also adding complications to achievement of sustainable development goals. Because it is negatively affecting progress to reach the goals of SDG3 and SDG12 by 2030. it is estimated that by year 2050 antibiotic resistance will cause deaths in millions.
