Braces or Aligners?! I’m an Orthodontist. Here’s What I Actually Chose For Myself.

Every orthodontist gets asked this. By patients, by students, by curious friends at dinner.

“If it were you, which would you actually choose?”

Here’s my honest answer: it depends. But let me tell you what it depends on and then tell you what I personally chose.

The clinical reality first:

Before recommending anything, I collect everything. Intraoral and extraoral photographs, a lateral cephalometric radiograph, an OPG, impressions of both jaws. I analyze the skeletal pattern, the dental relationship, the soft tissue profile. Only after all of that do I sit down with a patient and talk options.

Because the truth is there’s no universally better option. There’s only the right option for that specific case, that specific patient, that specific set of priorities.

Severe skeletal discrepancies, significant rotations, cases needing precise torque control- braces often give you more predictable control. Mild to moderate crowding, spacing, minor bite corrections, patients with strong compliance and aesthetic concerns- aligners have become genuinely capable of handling almost everything in this category now. The technology has advanced dramatically even in the last three years.

Patient preference matters too and I genuinely factor it in. A treatment a patient believes in is a treatment they’ll comply with.

What did I choose for myself?

Invisalign.

I am currently in my own aligner treatment. And yes I chose it with full knowledge of both options, having planned and delivered both in clinical practice.

I chose it because I believe in testing what I recommend. I chose it because the technology has earned my clinical trust. And I chose it because I wanted to understand the patient experience from the inside i.e., the attachments, the pressure after a new tray, the discipline of wearing them 22 hours a day.

It has taught me things about aligner therapy that no textbook or case study could.

Choosing between braces and aligners isn’t really a question of which is better. It’s a question of which is better for you, your case, your lifestyle, your commitment level.

If you had to choose today, what would you choose, braces or aligners? And what’s making you lean that way?

I had braces treatment, and honestly, it was a good experience overall. It takes a little time to adjust, but after that, you barely notice them. With proper care and patience, braces can give excellent results.

yes it depends upon the severity so in mild cases one should go with the aligner and in severe cases braces can work.
