Omeprazole, Pantoprazole and Rabeprazole all are Proton pump inhibitors and are also known as PPI Agents. These drugs inhibits the proton pump and reduces the formation of acidity in the stomach and used in the symptoms like Chronic acidity, nausea/vomiting, heart burn, stomach fullness and GERD (Gaestro Esophageal Reflux Disease)

**Class differentiation-**
Omeprazole is the first generation drug, Pantoprazole is the second generation drug and Rabeprazole is the third generation drug.

**Onset of action-**
Rabeprazole has fastest onset of action i.e. 1 hr then comes omeprazole which takes 1-2 hrs to gives its action than pantoprazole which takes 2 hrs. Doctors used to prescribe Rabeprazole for faster action.

**Drug Interaction** -
Pantoprazole has the least drug interaction then comes rabeprazole and omeprazole has the most interaction. That is why in Clopidogrel patients Pantoprazoles ate preferred due to their least drug interaction chances and less risk of side effects.

**Bioavailability of drug** -
The bioavailability of these three drugs differ due to their difference in metabolism and availability. The bioavailability of Pantoprazole is approximately 70-80%, Rabeprazole 50-60% and
Omeprazole 40-50%.

If you are taking PPIs for long term then it will lead to decrease in the acid production of the stomach due to which the absorption of some nutrients like Calcium, Magnesium and Vit B12 also decreases which needs acidic medium for their absorption. And this can lead to Osteoporosis, Anemia or Megaloblastic anemia.

Are there other side effects of PPIs in long term ?
