**Antibiotic resistance** refers to the capacity of bacteria to survive or grow despite exposure to concentrations of antibiotics that would normally inhibit or kill them

#### What is anti-biotic?

Antibiotics are substances produced by microorganisms or their derivatives that, in low concentrations, inhibit the growth of or destroy other microorganisms

- Treatment of bacterial infections
- Prophylaxis in surgery
- Management of life-threatening infections

### Mechanism of action:

ANTIBIOTICS

1. Inhibit Cell Wall Synthesis
2. Inhibit Protein Synthesis
3. Inhibit Nucleic Acid Synthesis
4. Inhibit Metabolic Pathway
5. Damage Cell Membrane

Bacterial death / Growth inhibition

- Overuse of antibiotics
- Incomplete treatment course
- Wrong dose / wrong drug
- Self-medication
- Use in viral infections
