**What if a protein from sugarcane replace the salvia and protect your teeth better than your own body?** Yes, the recent study highlights the beneficial of the sugar cane protein called CANECPI-5,a new type of artificial saliva. This artificial saliva can protect your teeth from acid damage, reduce harmful bacteria and prevent tooth decay. **Why this study is important** In some conditions like xerostomia, the condition where enough saliva is produced and this mostly happen in cancer patients after radiotherapy especially in head and neck cancers. As we know saliva is important for neutralization of acids, washing away bacteria and protects enamel. **Artificial Saliva** CANECPI-5, the proteins binds to the tooth enamel and forms a thin protective layer which acts as a barrier against acids. It protects teeth from the food acids, stomach acid and bacterial acids along with it prevents enamel erosion and tooth demineralization. It also has the antibacterial action also works even with the fluoride and strengthens enamel. **Who will benefit the most?** Cancer patients who undergo long term radiation therapy. People with chronic dry mouth especially elderly patients, autoimmune diseases and medication induced dry mouth. **Summary** The development of artificial saliva represents a promising advancement in the preventive dentistry. This is a very interesting read! I don’t think CANECPI-5 can replace sugar but it will be really beneficial for patients that are unable to produce enough saliva ---

This is a really informative post! This really can help the cancer patients undergoing long term radiation therapy, but I don’t think this artificial saliva can replace - it can support and protect but not completely match with natural saliva. ---

It will be a boon for patients with dry mouth. However, I think it can act as a support to them but cannot replace natural saliva completely. ---

Promising innovation for patients with xerostomia. Natural saliva also maintains oral microflora. The key question is…will CANECPI-5 preserve beneficial bacteria, not just prevent decay?🤔 ---
