A personal reflection on whom to choose: general physician or a specialist?

I would suggest visiting a general physician initially to confirm whether it is common eye infection or a chronic condition. In terms of major issues, visiting specialist is always recommended to get proper treatment.

I believe general physician should be the first choice for most problems . They can identify the condition and refer patients to the right specialist if needed. It also depends on where the patients live and health care facilities available in the area .

I am a general physician (G.P) myself and contacting a specialist is the last thing you want to do per patient protocol.

I see this could also spark a debate between what came first the chicken or the egg? Similarly, the problem with Indian disspora is understanding the patient protocol and clinical contact hygiene.

In the U.S/U.K patients are aware of their clinical contact protocol, i.e., connecting with PCP (Primary Care Physician, whonis either a D.O/D.C and sometimes MD generalized), later connecting with M.D (Board certified specialist — a broader version of the PCP) and at last the specialist who could be M.B,Ch or M.B.MD depends.

So yes its not about whom you connect directly but follow hierarchy. But, sadly in India there is a confusion especially because it’s OOP (Out Of Pocket) Paid even for Primary Care.

I would say it completely depends upon is your health problem minor or Severe, mostly even general practioner specify which expertise they practice in most, so going to a General practioner is completely fine as long as condition is minor, Definitely if you have severe condition Specialist should be direct choice.

If you can identify the specific cause of your health problem, go to a specialist first. But if you don’t have any idea then go to a general physician and take their advice for further specialized treatment.

This is the most underdiscussed topic and also the most important one, as it feels easy to visit a general physician, while the proper step is to visit a specialist, as this can help you know the whole issue by its root.

Your Question is very interesting But in case for initial diagnosis it is okay to go to the general physician but problem is critical then we’ve to go for specialist. Also we’ve to also think about those who don’t know where to go in such situation and prefer nearest physician so they can easily give follow up this problems usually occurs in rural areas.

I guess your topic of concern is valid as many people preferably seek out to the doctor whom they know and trust the most which is mostly their general physician doctor or can be an ent specialist which is rare and consult them for the specific specialist. It’s not actually about why general physician and not the specialist, it’s actually the trust that you have in doctor whom you know.

I think general physician for comprehensive primary care is generally acceptable but better go for a specialist for management of specific or complex medical conditions.

I think everyone will go to there primary physician to get diagnosed or treatment. It is absolutely fine to get a basic treatment from them. But if the problem will not completely solve after treatment or it gives you temporary relief than it required to visit to specialist. It may also helpful if your physician referred you to specialist.

Most people visit there primary. It a psychological that build in our brain to get treatment from physician for any kind of treatment instead of specialist.

I think we are so busy with work and everyday life that we often forget to take better care of ourselves. Sometimes, that’s why we delay seeing the right specialist.

Visiting a general physician in the first place is a good option if the issue appears manageable, as they can help identify the problem and, if necessary, can refer patients to a specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

I think that a general doctor can help you to choose the correct specialist.

As a lot of times our signs and symptoms are more like an effect of an underlying disease in the body. A general doctor will be able to guide a person into deciding whether the discomfort is itself a disease or a symptom to another hidden disease.

For eg. - When people are dehydrated, some experience pimples all over their body. It is very common to consider those pimples as a disease instead of understanding the underlying cause . Using ointments would halp only temporarily as it doesn’t solve the underlying cause.

A general doctor can help distinguish in such cases. Sometimes even recommend a specialist.

I have faced the same. My instinct now is very straightforward; go to a general physician. They most of the time are faster and cheaper too. If problem persists then go to specialist

A very common thought that many of us have. I think one of the main reasons we first visit a general physician is our mindset. We often assume that specialists are more expensive, so we choose a general physician first, even when the problem affects a specific organ.
